Diriyah Season is a five-month cultural and entertainment programme built around one of Saudi Arabia’s most significant historical sites. At-Turaif, the original seat of the Al Saud dynasty, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site made up of mud-brick palaces and mosques in the Najdi architectural style. The 2026-2027 season runs from mid-October through the end of March, drawing visitors with a programme that ranges from motorsport to classical music to food festivals.

What to Expect

The headline sporting event is the Diriyah E-Prix, the season opener for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. Electric racing cars run through a temporary street circuit that winds around the At-Turaif plateau, with grandstands offering views of both the race and the illuminated mud-brick ruins. The race weekend typically spans two days and sells out quickly — book tickets as soon as the race calendar is confirmed, usually in September.

Beyond motorsport, the season programme includes concert nights featuring regional and international artists, theatre productions, outdoor cinema screenings, and culinary markets. The Diriyah Art Futures centre, which opened inside the district, hosts exhibitions focused on digital and AI-generated art. Guided heritage tours of At-Turaif run throughout the season, giving visitors access to restored palaces and interpretive displays about the First Saudi State.

The Diriyah Gate development zone, which surrounds the historic core, houses a growing number of restaurants and cafes. Several have opened in restored warehouse buildings along the Wadi Hanifah. In the evenings, the entire district is lit up — the combination of modern lighting against the earthen architecture makes for a distinctive atmosphere that is hard to find elsewhere in the region.

Practical Information

Diriyah is located approximately 15 km northwest of central Riyadh. The easiest way to reach it is by taxi or ride-hailing app; the journey from central Riyadh takes around 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic. There is also a Riyadh Metro connection — the Diriyah Gate station on Line 4 (the Blue Line) stops within walking distance of the main entrance.

Entry to the outer Diriyah Gate development is free. Tickets are required for At-Turaif itself (approximately SAR 80 as of 2026 — verify current prices on the Diriyah Authority website) and for individual events such as the E-Prix and concerts. Event tickets are sold through the Diriyah official website and the Riyadh Season app.

Dress code follows standard Saudi public guidelines: modest clothing for both men and women. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended as the site involves uneven terrain and significant distances on foot. Plan for at least two to three hours if you want to see the historic core properly, and more if you are attending an evening event.

The cooler months of November through February are the most comfortable for outdoor visits. October and March can be warm during the day, though evenings are mild. We recommend arriving an hour before sunset to see the site in both daylight and illumination.
